Città della Pieve, Umbria

The new owners of this casale set in a beautiful spot in the Umbrian countryside wanted to turn the existing garden around, moving the pool from the road-facing northern side of the property to face the woods and hills to the south. Vegetation which had grown to obscure views and make the interiors dark was removed and the layout was simplified. A warm colour scheme of reds and oranges was requested for the single large planted bed between house and pool. The extensive garden was fenced to keep dogs in and boar out.

The 25-metre pool is slightly raised, with the upright edges stone-clad to resemble a rural drinking trough. The brown lining gives the water a greenish colour, to reflect the greens of the surrounding countryside. At the north end, the pool house is built into the hillside behind, making it almost invisible from the main house above.

Elsewhere ground levels were adjusted, trees planted, paths laid to join garden areas, a small orchard was created and lawns were laid. The old swimming pool was covered over to become a tank for rainwater, harvested for irrigation purposes.
