Northern Tuscany

The hillside of this woodland property in a mountainous area of northern Tuscany was more or less dismantled when an old house was demolished to make way for a very contemporary new build. The landscaping project presented numerous challenges, the most pressing of which was to reconstruct the steep hillside in such a way as to create usable spaces. Massive masonry or stone walls were rejected in favour of earth banks stabilized with electro-welded metal mesh, the grid spaces of which were subsequently planted in order to create a series of green walls. Another vital concern was to create a garden which provided a suitable interface between the strikingly contemporary home and the unspoilt natural woodland environment which surrounds it. Many of the trees lost during the building work have been replaced with the same species found in surrounding woodland (chestnut, hazel, hornbeam) while the banks are predominantly green (ivy) with splashes of colour provided by roses, leadwort, hypericum and clematis.
